My work explores the iconic stories and psychological architecture by which we frame our daily experience, and uses found materials, narrative and imagery to explore these spaces - their possibilities and boundaries. Using visual metaphor, I place protagonists, antagonists - Everyman - in the context of their undoing, amid their personal detritus. In weaving the story with objects of symbolic significance I suggest more than one story. The intention is to connect all our stories. I incorporate tools, architectural salvage, and other once-functional objects to give the work an immediate, commonplace visceral meaning and relevance. I deliberately create a tension between subjective and objective perspectives, pairing the three dimensional elements with the more elusive drawings. I use materials with a history, objects used and used up, in the hard work of building a life. |
