Katie Dell Kaufman (back)

My work explores the iconic stories and psychological architecture by which we frame our daily experience, and uses found materials, narrative and imagery to explore these spaces - their possibilities and boundaries. Using visual metaphor, I place protagonists, antagonists - Everyman - in the context of their undoing, amid their personal detritus. In weaving the story with objects of symbolic significance I suggest more than one story. The intention is to connect all our stories. I incorporate tools, architectural salvage, and other once-functional objects to give the work an immediate, commonplace visceral meaning and relevance. I deliberately create a tension between subjective and objective perspectives, pairing the three dimensional elements with the more elusive drawings. I use materials with a history, objects used and used up, in the hard work of building a life.
