BIO
The Norwegian artist Crispin Gurholt has developed his unique expression Live Photo since 2000. Live Photos are site-specific installations where the artist stages models in real environments. It creates a concrete, social space where the interpersonal relationship, interaction and presence are the work's meaning and endless potential. In addition to being a live performance, the installations are documented as photography and film. These frozen expanded moments are carefully directed and appears to be concentrated and complex narratives, where the past, present and future merge. As a spectator, one is caught in the same extended moment, while simultaneously being present in real time. This creates both a distance and proximity to the event, and in a brechtian way creating a space for reflection and critical thinking. Art is not primarily political or critical through the message it transmits, but through its ability to redefine time and space and thus contributing to new divisions of the symbolic and the material.
Live Photo can also be seen in the context of the historical tableux vivant (French for motion pictures) that were staging of people in a thematic environment often based on famous paintings, historical or biblical events or erotic tableaux of naked models. Gurholt`s Live Photos are always culturally, socially or politically commenting pointing at gender roles, class differences, social roles or power relations. His complex installations are strongly influenced by art historical, philosophical and sociological references. Subtle storytelling unfolds slowly, balancing on a fine line between fantasy and reality.
Gurholt is fully aware that reality is a social construction, carefully created by our impressions of the various cultural codes that we understand and interpret based on our own perspective and understanding of shared cultural codes. Paradoxically, the events are not so much about what we see; they concern the underlying invisible social constructions that define our lives. It is about discloser and revealing of various aspects of our existence through a collision between art and our reality, between subject and viewer.
Crispin Gurholt (f.1965 in Oslo) is a graduate of the National Art Academy in Oslo (1993-98) and New York University Film School (1996). He has had exhibitions in Venice, Rome, Turin, Madrid and Paris, the Henie Onstad Art Centre, Art Copenhagen, Stenersen Museum, Vigeland Museum, the North Norwegian Art Museum, Lillehammer Art Museum and Haugar Art Museum. Gurholt is participating in the 11th Havana Biennial. He has also been a set designer for several films and stage productions, and produced and directed numerous music videos, including videos for the Norwegian band Turbonegro.
